Working with Dave

My name is Doreen Titmuss née Davis. I worked with Dave in the Metropolitan Police from 1980 until he retired.  I always found Dave to be a kind but complex man.  He was always ready to help the victim and had no mercy for the perpetrator.  He was harsh but fair I think it is fair to say.  He had a great sense of humour and was often laughing.  He would play jokes on people when he was in the front office.  I remember one time he changed the 'pull' sign to 'push' on the front door and nobody could get in to the front office at Chadwell Heath.  He gave up smoking once and he didn't let anyone smoke within 12 feet of him.  He even put 'No Smoking' signs up around the police station..... that didn't last long until he started again!

Dave was an advanced driver and a firearms officer for a short time.  He and I dealt with many situations that I cannot go into here but I was safe in the knowledge that Dave would always have my back.  I considered Dave and Joan, his wife, to be friends of mine when I worked at Ilford.  I met all of his children and even though they did not know it, he loved them very much. It was difficult for Dave to show emotion. Sadly Joan died and Dave nursed her during her last two years.

I would speak to Dave on his birthday and a few times during the year. My husband and I went to his house in Kessingland a couple of times and he would always make us welcome.  Sometimes Dave would call me just for a chat, he could certainly chat.  I enjoyed his phone calls, telling me about his neighbours and his cars, his children and grandchildren.  I shall miss his phone calls and of course, Dave the person.
